Chris Hipkins Will Succeed Jacinda Ardern As Prime Minister Of New Zealand

Chris Hipkins, a Labour Party member from New Zealand, has been named the lone candidate for the party’s leadership and will take over as prime minister in place of Jacinda Ardern. He was initially elected to the legislature in 2008, and in November 2020, he was named minister for Covid-19. She claimed she didn’t have “enough in the tank” to lead in Ms. Ardern’s shocking declaration on Thursday. Given that New Zealand will face a general election in October, it is unclear how long Mr. Hipkins will remain government.

Currently, Mr. Hipkins, 44, is the minister of public service, education, and law enforcement. Before he can take the reins as leader, he must still receive the Labour Party’s official support in the House of Representatives on Sunday. If he wins that support, Ms. Ardern will formally submit her resignation to the governor-general, who will then name Mr. Hipkins as prime minister on behalf of King Charles III.

New Zealand’s next prime minister faces a difficult task. Jacinda Ardern said she has no regrets about her resignation. However, if the new Labour leader wants to keep his position following the election in 2023, he will have a difficult fight on his hands. According to polls, inflation and rising socioeconomic inequality caused Ms. Ardern’s popularity to reach record lows. They suggested that the country’s Labour Party received a comparable low level of public support. The nomination of Mr. Hipkins eliminates Kiri Allan, the justice minister, from becoming the nation’s first Maori prime minister.

New Zealand's next prime minister faces a difficult task. Jacinda Ardern said she has no regrets about her resignation.

I don’t have enough left in the tank, Jacinda Ardern says in a statement accompanying her resignation, The world’s youngest female head of state and government, Jacinda Ardern, 37, said during her resignation announcement that the past five and a half years had been the “most fulfilling” of her life. She did, however, note that managing the country during a “crisis” had been challenging because it coincided with the Covid epidemic, the Christchurch mosque massacres, and the White Island volcano eruption.

Some people suggested Ms. Ardern was “running away before getting booted out” in response to the mixed reception to her statement. Sam Neill, a well-known performer from New Zealand, however, claimed that she had endured “disgraceful” abuse from “bullies” and “misogynists.” Mr. Hipkins will have served as the country’s leader for only eight months if Labour loses the general election, however Harry Atkinson’s eight-day tenure as prime minister in 1884 holds the record for the shortest tenure.
